5 Habits Successful People Follow Every Day -The Muse
5 Habits Successful People Follow Every Day -The Muse5 Habits Successful People Follow Every DayYou know those days when you leave work feeling amazing, pumped that you were highly productive? On the flipside, Im sure you have days that are just the opposite. Ones that leave you feeling frustrated, wondering whether you got anything done. What if there was a way to end every day knowing that it was successful?Unfortunately, theres no bulletproof formula to guarantee this, but there are certain practices you can follow thatll help. Here are five habits that, if practiced daily, can boost your success at work1. Keep a Gratitude JournalGratitude journals have grown wildly popular and I can understand why. Earlier this year, I started a journal and committed to writing down one thing Im grateful for every day. At 159 days in, Im still going strong. I found that expressing gratitude every morning before work gets me in the right mindset and helps me prepare for the days challenges. But do nt take my word for it. A study by UCLA found that people who regularly wrote down what they were grateful for were mora optimistic and cheerful than those who didnt. Interestingly, they also had fewer doctor visits and fewer work absences. Expressing gratitude daily is a simple, quick practice that has a massive impact, and theres even an app for it in case youre not a groupie of physical journaling like I am. 2. Reduce Context SwitchingContext switching is when you jump between various, unrelated tasks. Youre heads down on a project but get interrupted by an urgent message. A few minutes later, a conversation between co-workers distracts you, and, after you finally refocus, you remember an email you should have responded to earlier in the day. Does this sound like your day? While rapid context switching may seem like the norm of the modern worker, Jessica Harris from Trello explains how it comes at a high cost We spend an average of just one minute and 15 seconds on a task before b eing interrupted. It takes an average of 25 minutes to resume a task after being interrupted. Heavily multitasking can temporarily lower your IQ by up to 15 points. You probably cant eliminate context switching altogether, but being mindful of the productivity damage it causes will allow you to create rules to avoid distraction (more on that in a second). 3. Create If/When-Then PlansI learned about this habit from Robert Cialdinis book, Pre-Suasion A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade. Heres how it works. You pick a cue, then pick a desirable action that you can link to that cue. Here are a few if/when-then rules I follow If/when I need to work without interruption, then I leave my desk and find a drop-by room.If/when its time to eat lunch, then I order a salad. Boring, I know.If/when I get a calendar invite for Thursday (when my company has a no-meeting policy), then I move the meeting to a different day. Research suggests that people who use if/when-then planning are betwe en two and three times more likely to achieve their goals. This type of planning is effective because youre proactively creating automatic responses. When situations arise that might prevent you from reaching your long-term goals, youve already decided how youll act. 4. Exercise- Even if Only for a Few MinutesYou know you should exercise- the benefits are significant. But knowing isnt the tough part- its finding time in your busy schedule to make it happen. Running, cycling, or going to the gym may be ideal, but all you really need is a few minutes. One vorkaufsrecht is the 7-Minute Workout. Its an intense workout you can do almost anywhere and is proven to deliver results. Taking a short break to go on a walk is a great way to reduce stress. A few years back I committed to going on one walk in the middle of the workday. These quick strolls elevated my heart rate, for just a few minutes, and it enabled me to go back to my work with renewed focus. So, even if you dont have time to hi t the gym, exercising for only a few minutes each day is still worth it. 5. Have a Shutdown RitualEric Barker, a best-selling author who wrote an entire book on success, teaches the importance of having a shutdown ritual in which you take the time to close out the days business and prepare for tomorrow. His research found that the simple act of writing down the things you need to take care of the next day can settle your brain and help you relax. My shutdown ritual includes making a concise list (no more than three) of the most important things I need to do the next day. Since committing to this practice Ive found that I think less about work when Im out of the office. My ritual also includes cleaning my desk and shutting down my laptop, practices signaling that my work day has come to an end. It turns out that implementing this has been found to relieve anxiety and help you enjoy your evening. One final thought. While each of these five habits is intended to help you be more succe ssful, its important to also pause and take a moment to define what success means to you. These are guidelines, and, ultimately, youve got to create your own standard of excellence and measure progress accordingly. Because real, lasting success comes by aligning your actions with whats most important to you.

An Easy Way to Bounce Back From A Setback at Work-The Muse
An Easy Way to Bounce Back From A Setback at Work-The MuseAn Easy Way to Bounce Back From A Setback at Work-The MuseEvery person will experience a setback at in their career. It might be a job interview that didnt go well, a networking introduction that never happened, or getting laid off. Whatever the specifics, bumps in the road are part of the territory- and finding a productive way to cope with your struggles is something anyone can benefit from. It turns out that something as simple the way you think about an obstacle has a lot to do with how successful youll be at getting through it. It comes down to your mindset- the ideas and attitudes with which you approach a situation. Translation Just changing how you think about a problem can help you solve it.I know it sounds too good to be true, but it isnt. Leading motivation and behavioral change researchers ranging from Stanfords Carol Dweck to Case Western Reserve Universitys Richard Boyatzis have demonstrated through compelling re search just how powerful mindsets can be. For example, in a study of pre-med students, Dweck showed that students with a limited, Im as good as Im ever going to get mindset got worse grades than those with a growth, I can get better mindset. Just by viewing their progress differently, they ended up with different outcomes.Changing your mindset works outside the classroom, too. It can help you overcome a challenging situation in just three steps. Lets take a job interview for example that you didnt getStep 1 Become Aware of Your Default OpinionBeing able to step back from your current situation and identify how youre thinking about it is at least half the battle. Whats the lens through which youre currently thinking about the issue? Do you see it as a promising opportunity or a worthless, annoying task? The story you tell yourself- what you currently believe to be true- this is your default mindset. Default Mindset For an Interview That Didnt Go Well Thats a huge setback. This kind o f opportunity will never come up again. Im not good at this and should just give up.Step 2 Consider the Completely Opposite MindsetThis is where your imagination and creativity comes into play. If you were to think about this issue an entirely opposite way, what would that look like? Instead of a disaster, what if you saw this as an incredibly lucky break? This is not about which mindset is true. They all have elements that are true, as well as blind spots. This is also not wishful thinking. Imagining a different one is exactly that- recognizing that a different way of looking at the situation may lead to different ideas about what to do next. Let your mind bounce around a few ideas.Opposite Mindset 1 Theres a lot to learn from that interview. I bet if I focused on what I could learn and tried again, Id do better. Time to be on the lookout for the next opening. Opposite Mindset 2 Maybe I choked, not because Im a bad applicant, but because Im not really into this role, and should loo k elsewhere. Step 3 ChooseMindsets are a choice. It helps to imagine each one as a different pair of glasses that provide different perspectives on your issue. Go ahead and them them on until you find one that fits you. Notice how you feel and think when wearing it. (Use the STOP technique to tune into how it makes you feel.) Does this perspective energize you? Does it provide some new ideas? Compare unterstellung to what comes up when you consider your default. Keep imagining different perspectives until you come up with fresh ideas that help you feel unstuck. Choosing Your Mindset Im going to look at this interview as a learning experience, and not indicative of my entire career. Next time, Im going to practice with a friend beforehand so I can go in fully prepared.Remember, mindsets are never completely true or false. The question is not whether youve landed on the right one, but rather How useful is this outlook compared to the alternatives? So, pick the one thatll help you get over a career hurdle and move forward.

Carbon Nanotubes Enable Gene Transfer
Carbon Nanotubes Enable Gene Transfer Carbon Nanotubes Enable Gene Transfer Michael Schrlau was a dyed-in-the-wool mechanical engineer throughout most of his formal education, which was not surprising given his love of anything automotive. If you had asked him 15 years ago whether he would be working in the field of bioengineering, I would have looked at you cross-eyed, he says. But as he studied for his doctorate, he began to think about what kind of use there might be for the cool nanotube-based probes he enjoyed making.Fast-forward to today, and Schrlau, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Rochester Institute of Technologys Kate Gleason College of Engineering and founding director of the universitys Nano-Bio Interface Laboratory, is working to integrate biological and artificial systems at the micro/nanoscale level in areas, such as nanomanufacturing, nanomanipulation, technology-biology interactions, and biomedical applications.fruchtwein recently in collaboration wit h the University of Rochester Medical Center, Schrlau and his team have developed a new, more efficient method for gene transfer using carbon nanotubes to deliver fluids into cells. One of the most difficult things to do right now is to modify cells, says Schrlau. The current techniques either have safety risks or are not efficient. Our technology is allowing a quick, simple method of delivering genetic material, proteins, and particles into cells quickly and safely. For cancer therapy, that means we can deliver cell therapy quicker before its too late for a patient. For DNA editing where biologists are coming up with solutions to cure diseases by either modifying the genetic makeup of cells and they dont have a way to do that, we provide a technology to do that.Electron microscope image of animal cells (blue) cultured on an array of carbon nanotubes. Image University of RochesterThe simple, inexpensive, and efficient process involves inserting biofluids into cells using an array of carbon nanotubes. The arrays are shaped like tiny drinking straws bundled together to spread fluids or molecules to cells over a larger area than has been possible before. In fact, the number of cells reached simultaneously can be in the tens of thousands. In one test of the new nonviral/nonchemical method, the researchers observed that 98 percent of the cells survived and 85 percent successfully received the new genetic material. This increases the ability to introduce simultaneously more test biofluids into larger and more varied populations of target cells. But there are mucksmuschenstill some challenges. One of the biggest is manufacturing the devices, says Schrlau. We need many more for end users to try them, he notes. The standard process for removing the membrane and exposing the embedded nanotubes is using reactive ion etching, but there are some throughput issues, says Schrlau. So the team is looking at ways to make a smaller device with less complicated processes and higher throughput. To commercialize the product, We need to reduce the complexity of the manufacturing process. We are trying to figure out different ways. Thats where mechanical engineering steps in, he says.A focus now is on a polishing wet-etch technique that ends up with the same result as reactive ion etching but is much simpler, quicker, cheaper, and results in higher throughput, he says. This will now produce about ten membranes in a week. Although only one is needed to transect hundreds of thousands of cells, because biologists do repetitive experiments, it wouldnt be uncommon to use a whole set of ten in a week, he says. The team is looking in the next year or two to be able to manufacture the devices consistently, repeatedly, and in large quantities for a variety of applications. We are making really good progress because of the polishing process, Schrlau says. At the same time, were getting preliminary data on the hard-to-transect cells t-cells, stem cells, neurons three broad areas where we are focusing.Good ResultsWith this and with overcoming the production barrier, we will binnensee an upswing in terms of doing longer term studies, more robust studies, comprehensive studies of all cell types, he says, adding that there will be a lot more variety of cell types that can be transected efficiently.Schrlaus mechanical engineering mindset There has to be a better way is what started him on this career journey. While exploring how to merge technology and biology, Schrlau was learning cell electrophysiology technology from a highly trained, experienced, expert who was beyond the post-doc level. Using a well-established technique, it took the expert months to get a couple of data points.I thought about this smart cover slip idea, he says. If I had a device or surface where I could put cells on top and be able to inject things in the cells and measure electrical signals, you could do hundreds of thousands of data points simultaneously rather than a couple eve ry few months. Imagine the data that you would gain. I was motivated to expedite biomedical research to help understand the basic unit of life and how disease progresses at the single cell level. There just werent high-tech techniques to do that. Thats what got me into this. Nancy Giges is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionOur technology is allowing a quick, simple method of delivering genetic material, proteins, and particles into cells quickly and safely.Asst. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction indust ry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard geschftliches miteinander Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling o f being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

6 Things You Should Never Say at Work
6 Things You Should Never Say at Work6 Things You Should Never Say at Work6 Things You Should Never Say at WorkHere are six statements to avoid saying at work if you like your job and want to keep it1.Im bored. What you mean They dont give me enough work to keep me busy. What they hear when you say it Im not motivated enough to find something worthwhile to doORTheres plenty to do but I dont have my priorities straight. Why its a dicke bretter bohren mssen Intentionally or not, youre openly admitting that you dont know how to manage your time, and people will wonder why theyre so busy while youre bored and twiddling your thumbs.2.This place isnt as fun as it used to be.What you mean Things have changed so much that the original appeal that led me to work here is missing. What they hear when you say it I dont like working here anymore. Why its a problem You come across sounding like Whiny McWhinerson-Buzzkill. You can bet that plenty of people still enjoy working in the place you now despis e. Even the ones who might agree are probably trying to make the best of it. Either way, a complaint like this quickly breeds negativity for all who have to hear it.3.These managers dont know what theyre doing. What you mean I think things could be managed better around here. What they hear when you say it I dont approve of the way management handles the work load/policies/meetings and will not produce my best work as long as they continue working this way.Why its a problem Youre pretty much begging to get fired, which might not be a problem if thats exactly what you want to happen4.Its stupid that they dont let us use social networks. What you mean Its stupid that they dont let us use social networks. (No misinterpreting this one)What they hear when you say it Facebooking, tweeting, or instant messaging is more important to me than working. Why its a problem Youre not getting paid to be a social butterfly. If your company doesnt allow access to social networking sites, its probably be cause employees have abused the privilege. Its not unreasonable to expect you to focus on company goals and not on your constant updates of followers.5.How come s/he has an office and the rest of us are stuck in a cube farm? What you mean That person doesnt seem qualified or important enough to deserve an office. What they hear when you say it I think Im more important than that person and I hate being mixed in with the rest of these bottom feeders. Why its a problem Whine whine whine, complain complain complain. Youre where you are because they think you should be there. If they thought you needed an office, you would have one. If you want an office, ask what you can do to earn a aufsteigen to a position that comes with one.6.I better take it easyI dont want them to expect this level of productivity from meallthetime. What you mean Hahaha Its a joke Seriously, I had a productive week and Im proud of what I accomplished. What they hear when you say it Im not putting in the effort I shoul d be. You should only expect 100% productivity from me every once in a while. Why its a problem The fact that you made this statement, even if you were joking, makes your employer question their decision to hire you. Youre basically telling them youre not interested in working hard and they shouldnt expect much from you. Seriously bad message to sendWe may all have these thoughts at times, but some things are better left in your head and out of the lines of conversation. If you still insist on complaining to your coworkers or manager in this fashion, I guarantee 1) Youll be labeled the bro Whiner, and 2) your coworkers will begin to resent you and avoid working with you whenever possible. Itll only be a matter of time before someone sets you straightjust hope its not in the form of getting canned

What To Do When Someone Takes Credit for Your Work -The Muse
What To Do When Someone Takes Credit for Your Work -The MuseWhat To Do When Someone Takes Credit for Your Work Managers love to extol the virtues of a team mentality. I cant count how many schlocky motivational posters Ive seen emblazoned on middle management walls (or fabric-covered cubicle dividers, as the case may be) over the years, all claiming that teamwork is pretty much the solution to everything. And sure, Im all about striving for the greater good of the group- but at the end of the day, team performance is rarely a factor during those year-end reviews with your boss. Which is exactly why we all work so hard to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the pack. Lets be honest- its those special projects, great presentations, well-written articles, and everything in between that make us valuable members of the team (elend to mention help us get to the next level).Of course, this assumes youre actually getting the credit for your efforts- which, sadly, you can never assume. Whet her intentional or an honest mistake, colleagues and bosses routinely take credit where it is most certainly not due, and your contributions can go unnoticed by those who matter. To really succeed at the office, you not only need to do the work, you need to make sure your name is included in the credits. Heres how.Go PublicIn my first role as a manager, I welches cautious about sharing my ideas with the group- not because I didnt have them, but because I wanted to make sure they were good before speaking up. So, naturally, I turned to mora senior members of my team or my boss and bounced ideas off of them, first.Soon after, unterstellung same mentors and bosses shared these ideas in team meetings. Initially, I was thrilled- my ideas must be solid But that elation lasted for only a few moments before I quickly realized that my proposal wasnt being shared- it was being hijacked. Whats mora, even if I had spoken up, no one would ever believe the idea was mine after a more senior member of the team had mentioned it first.Instead of being overcome with disappointment and frustration (although trust me, I was filled with both), I turned the experience into a hard-learned lesson. The next time I had a great idea brewing, I thought through it, planned it out as if I already had buy-in from the group, and piped up to present it at the next team meeting.Since I first shared it in a public forum, everyone was aware that the idea was mine. And, because I had put extra effort into plotting out how to implement it, my boss and colleagues were more than happy to give me credit when we eventually presented it to a larger group.Though it might be intimidating, announcing your plans to a wider audience naturally helps prevent others from being tempted to borrow or be inspired by your ideas.Keep a Few Tricks Up Your SleeveSometimes, sharing your genius plans in a public forum isnt always possible, so youll have to find other ways to brand your ideas as your own.For example, when I was working on a very small team that rarely had meetings, it was nearly impossible for me to get my ideas in front of decision-makers until well after I had worked through them with my boss. On more than a few occasions, after spending weeks managing a project myself and crafting a winning presentation, I was rewarded with the opportunity to watch my boss lead the meeting where it was presented, never once mentioning who had done all the work. Finally, I decided to change my game. For every project going forward, I proceeded just as I had before, but I also did a bit of extra research. When the presentation rolled around, I had anecdotes and additional data that wasnt included in my boss speech- and I offered them up during the meeting. By being over-prepared and anticipating additional questions, I came across as an expert on the topic, without making my boss look bad.Whats more- after I started doing this, we ended up presenting more as a team. Although it was never explicitly n oted that I was behind the ideas, more and more credit began to shared equally between us.Know When to Let it GoWhile there are certainly times when I felt justified in speaking up for myself, perhaps the hardest lesson I had to learn was knowing when to just let it go. Heres the thing about getting credit Youre not going to get it for everything you do. Thats just part of the job, and its part of being on a team.I was reminded of this when I became a manager, and I had a few staff members who expected to be given credit for every positive outcome even remotely related to work they had done. I tried my best to recognize my team whenever warranted, but I found these continual reminders frustrating, almost always taking the shine off any positive feedback I had for them already. While there are ways you can position yourself to help assure youll earn that recognition from others, if you expect credit for everything you do, youll no doubt find yourself disappointed. Save your credit-ear ning strength for important projects and youll help establish yourself as not only an outstanding individual contributor, but a strong team player as well.

These are all the ways you can be a terrible leader
These are all the ways you can be a terrible leader These are all the ways you can be a terrible leader Below is a note I recently received from an executive coaching client that, although makes me sad, carries great wisdom. This high performing executive leader was leaving an organization she loved and had relocated for with mixed feelings. As is often the case, she was leaving because of her boss. - - - Good morning Mary Lee, I have one more week reporting to this woman that has made the last 14 months of my life incredibly difficult. The exit process has been even more difficult. In 20 years in the workplace I have never experienced anything like this from someone at this womanâs level. Every leader has opportunity, but I do not believe there are many who behave as badly as what I have witnessed over the past year. I am also amazed how her leaders look away, an ostrich to this womanâs behavior. I am not personalizing this (thank you Mary Lee), I understand it is simply inconvenient to disrupt the status quo or face the difficult conversations or the admit that perhaps it was a mistake to promote her to her current role. Her leaders are not stupid or unaware, despite the harm to our organization. So, I am writing this to you, because I will not talk with my team, or my peers about this (that would make me a terrible leader). As catharsis, the things I wish I could say but will not. You are a terrible leader. Not when you âhold people accountableâ. Not when you are a âtough criticâ. Not when you have âhigh standardsâ. Not when you want results. Not when you want to control costs. And not when you want to make changes in organizational structure. You are a terrible leader when you donât realize the impact of your behavior and your words. You are a terrible leader when you are primarily concerned with how you appear to your leaders. You are a terrible leader when you donât listen. You are a terrible leader when you believe you have all the answers. You are a terrible leader when you favor your friends and those you perceive as loyal to you. You are a terrible leader when you formulate opinions about employees based upon gossip. You are a terrible leader when you search for situations to support your subjective opinions. You are a terrible leader when you do not seek feedback from your team. You are a terrible leader when you are dishonest. You are a terrible leader when you make snarky comments about those you dislike. You are a terrible leader when you donât communicate clearly. You are a terrible leader when you cause entire teams to be fearful of making any mistake. You are a terrible leader when you lack the ability to trust. You are a terrible leader when you waste othersâ time scrambling for meaningless last-minute requests. You are a terrible leader when you have no respect for your subordinatesâ time, calendar, or other obligations when you need something. You are a terrible leader when you trivialize and dismiss employee engagement, âthey are never happyâ, âthey just want to complainâ. You are a terrible leader when you are inequitable with opportunity, resources and support. You are a terrible leader when you withhold opportunity, resources and support as consequences for displeasing you. You are a terrible leader when you make decisions about employees based upon what HR can âprove.â You are a terrible leader when you scramble to cover organizational mistakes, rather than accepting and correcting. You are a terrible leader. But you already know that. - - - Iâm happy she is going to a role sheâs excited about. Her culture tolerated a bad leader. Her peers did not demand more from this leader. They all felt they could not be heard because theyâd be perceived as bad leaders themselves. This is cultural dysfunction. It costs people fulfillment which theyâll only put up with for so long. And it costs organizations millions in recruitment and on-boarding. Do you run a âsafeâ work environment void of blame and open to candor? Do you seek and act on 360 feedback? Or do you look the other way because a leader can âget it doneâ at any cost. If itâs the latter youâre foolish. Think of what youâd gain in productivity if you had both a servant and results oriented leader. And if you think you canât have both youâre choosing to make excuses that are apathetic and in denial. Donât be a terrible leader who tolerates terrible leadership. Revisit the company values. Develop departmental values. And recruit for talent that includes the values. Itâs time that will payoff far more than the time investment up front. Donât lose top talent because youâre lazy or you fear confrontation. Your culture and company depend on it. Corporate politics are difficult to maneuver. Here is a free tool to help you navigate your career along the way: 31 Success Practices for Leaders in the High Stakes Corporate World.

J.K. Rowling on how to deal with failure in life and work
J.K. Rowling on how to deal with failure in life and work J.K. Rowling on how to deal with failure in life and work In August 1994, Joanne Rowling filed a restraining order against her husband, divorced shortly afterwards, and fell into a deep depression. Her one-year-old marriage had failed, and she suddenly found herself jobless, âas poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homelessâ and living off welfare benefits to take care of her five-month-old daughter.A few years prior, Rowling was dealt another series of blows when her mother died from multiple sclerosis, her relationship with her father broke down and she suffered a miscarriage. This was a far cry from the life that Rowling had hoped for, as she later noted, âI think it is fair to say that by any conventional measureâ¦I had failed on an epic scaleâ¦The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.â 1These failures led Rowling to a state of clinical depression and the verge of suicide. 2But Rowling r efused to roll over and die.Shortly after leaving Portugal for the U.K., Rowling began writing her novel, whilst battling depression, fear and poverty. And in 1995, she finished her manuscript for the book, Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, and submitted it to book agents.Little did she know at the time, how much her life would change afterwards.Within a five-year period, Rowlingâs novel broke book sales records in the U.S. and U.K., won the British Book Award for Childrenâs Book of the Year and sold seven-figure sum film rights to Warner Bros. And over a decade later, the Harry Potter book series became the best-selling book series of all-time- over 500 million copies sold worldwide- and Rowling became the worldâs first billionaire author. How did this single mother climb out of poverty and failure to become worldâs richest author? And what can we learn from this to effectively deal with failure in life and work?Rock Bottom As the Solid Foundation For SuccessâItâ s only after weâve lost everything that weâre free to do anything.â - Tyler Durden, Fight Club.Right from childhood, our culture and society has told us how we should think about success and failure. As students in high school and college, weâre taught that anything less than the best grades, admission into the best colleges and recruitment by the best companies, is failure. As employees and entrepreneurs, weâre taught that anything less than a certain high income level, promotions, top performance reviews, a boatload of money for retirement and a profitable business, is failure. As parents and spouses, weâre taught that anything less than a happy marriage, well-brought-up children, and a large, spacious, beautiful house in the suburbs, is failure. As a result of these beliefs, we spend the majority of our lives trying to avoid failure at all costs. But what if failure is the very foundation for the success we strive for? After J.K. Rowling had âfailed on an epic scaleâ and hit rock bottom, she was left with only two choices to make: either continue to hold unto societies negative beliefs about failure or use failure as a foundation for success.Rowling chose the latter and later explained that, ârock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.âIn her 2008 Harvard Commencement Address on the âFringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,â Rowling further explains that:âFailure was a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea.âRe-framing failure as a fou ndation for success, gave Rowling the confidence to bounce back and pursue her dreams again, and the freedom to do so without the worry of what other people would think.Avoid the Pity Party Trap and Take Full ResponsibilityâMost people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.â - Sigmund FreudItâs easy to wallow in self-pity, point the finger at other people and avoid taking full responsibility for a failure. But avoidance of responsibility does not liberate, it enslaves.True freedom requires taking full responsibility for past, current and future actions. And it is only after doing so, that we are free to change the destiny of our lives and bounce back from failure. At her lowest point, Rowling woke up every morning with severe depression, and a crippling fear that her two-year-old daughter, whom she loved dearly, would be dead: âIt was almost a surprise to me every morning that she was still ali ve. I kept expecting her to die. It was a bad bad time.â 3Rowling- like most people in her unfortunate situation- couldâve thrown a pity party after her catastrophic failures, but instead, she chose to take full responsibility for her actions, and rebuild her life from scratch.Shortly afterwards, despite her poor living conditions, Rowling finished writing the manuscript for the Harry Potter novel, which turned her fortunes around.Imagine for a second what couldâve happened to Rowling and her two-year-old daughter, if Rowling refused to take full responsibility for her life.Today, Rowling would still be living off state benefits, still struggling to make ends meet, and an entire generation of children would never have heard of Harry Potter.Treat Failure Like A ScientistâI have not failed. Iâve just found 10,000 ways that wonât work.â ? Thomas A. EdisonIn 1995, after Rowling finished her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, she began to submit her novel to publishing houses. The book was submitted to twelve publishing houses. All twelve rejected the manuscript. 4But these failures didnât stop Rowling from chasing her dreams. She got back on her feet and kept trying again.Rowling submitted her novel for the 13th time to Bloomsbury, a publishing house in London. This time however, her novel was accepted and published. When asked how she stayed motivated to push through the book rejections, Rowling said, âI had nothing to lose and sometimes that makes you brave enough to try.â 5Just like a scientist, Rowling saw failure as a data point to help guide the next experiment, rather than an indication of her self-worth.She saw failure as a cost to pay on the path to finding the right answers.Rowling treated failure like a scientist, and thatâs why she kept trying, again and again, until she su cceeded.Let Failure Fuel Your FireBut it ainât about how hard ya hit. Itâs about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. Thatâs how winning is done!â ?Sylvester Stallone, Rocky BalboaThe truth is, failure isnât your enemy to be âdealtâ with, itâs your friend and ally, to be embraced and used to fuel every future effort you make.Whether youâve failed as a student, parent, spouse, business owner, writer, or athlete, remember that failure doesnât define who you are, itâs the solid foundation to build your future success upon.Rowlingâs story from rags to riches is a reminder that failure presents an opportunity to freely pursue your goals without inhibition and worry about what others think about you.Failure is the proof that you are capable of succeeding at whatever it is that you set your eyes on. And in parting words from J.K.Rowling on the benefits of failure:âFailure taught me things about myself tha t I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected; I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned.âMayo Oshin writes at MayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. The 12-Step Plan to a Successful Career Change - Resumonk Blog
The 12-Step Plan to a Successful Career Change - Resumonk Blog The 12-Step Plan to a Successful Career Change Being stuck in a job that doesnât allow you to reach your full potential can cause a lot of unwanted stress and uncertainty for many people. Weâre here to remind you that you arenât stuck, and itâs totally possible to switch into a different industry, field or position. Maybe youâve lost interest in your current profession, or maybe youâve discovered a new interest in another field. No matter the reason, deciding to switch careers is life-changing. To be successful at whatever it is you choose to do, you need to make the change the right way. If youâre considering a career change but donât know where to start, follow these 12 steps: 1. Discover What You Truly Enjoy The last thing you want is to go through the process of switching careers just to get into an industry you donât like. List your likes, dislikes, values and interests. Identify exactly what it is about your current job thatâs making you want to leave - and make sure to avoid career paths that could have the same obstacles. For some people, this could be the toughest step. Figuring out what you truly enjoy and are passionate about after ignoring it for years isnât a simple task. Ask yourself, âWhat do I get excited about doing?â or âWhatâs something I spend my free time thinking about or doing?â Choose a career related to your answers to those questions. 2. List Careers That Satisfy Your Passions Once youâve keyed in on some of your passions and interests, search for careers that would encompass those things. For example, if you spend a lot of your time thinking about or hanging out with your dog, consider a career that has to do with animals. The important part about this step is keeping your skills in mind, as well. Just because you like dogs doesnât mean you have the expertise or skills required to be a veterinarian. However, if your skills include marketing, writing and designing, you could consider working as a marketing specialist for an animal protection agency or dog kennel. The trick is to combine your skills with your passion to create your ideal position, and go from there. 3. Research the Careers That Made Your List Once youâve come up with your list of dream careers, start researching. The bigger the industry change youâre making, the more research you should do. If you want to make a worthwhile, informed decision, this might be the most important step. Think about the years of research and education you had before going into your current position - can you imagine how difficult it wouldâve been to adjust without all that information? Set yourself up for success by learning as much as you can before you start applying to jobs. 4. Make the Decision Youâve brainstormed your interests, listed careers that relate to them and researched them all - now itâs time to decide. Making a decision is important because it will frame the way the rest of your career change process goes. You need to pinpoint a specific industry or career youâre trying to break into in order to achieve that goal. 5. Develop an Action Plan Once youâve decided on the path youâre going to take next, develop a specific plan with measurable goals, action items and a timeline. There are probably new skills you need to learn, professionals you should meet and work to wrap up at your current job. You might even have a few personal goals youâd like to work on while making this shift. Leaping from career to career isnât a casual move - you donât want to take it lightly. The more detailed your plan is, the better chance youâll have at finding your dream job quickly. 6. Adjust Your Personal Brand When you hand someone your business card or invite them to check out your online portfolio, they should be able to tell which industry you belong to now - not your past field. This step includes adjusting your resume, cover letter and portfolio as much as possible so potential employers know youâre all in. When you edit your own professional brand to be more related to the new industry, theyâll see your dedication in that aspect. You can consider creating a functional or skills-based resume using Resumonk. Highlight what transferable skills you have learnt in your previous profession and how they apply to the new industry. 7. Start Networking in Your Desired Field In any career field, itâs not only about what you know, itâs also about who you know. Start attending networking events for your industry and meeting as many people as you can. Introduce yourself and say youâre starting to break into the field now. This is a great opportunity to ask seasoned professionals for their tips or advice on how to get into the industry and be successful - people love talking about themselves, their stories and their success, so theyâll remember you for asking. 8. Update Your Training As you learn more about your new field, you might discover you need to significantly broaden your horizons. Start slowly, taking only a course or two at a time. Not only will this be difficult to juggle with your current position, but itâll also help you confirm youâre truly interested in the field. If itâs not required to get a job in the field, you might not feel the need to get a new degree or certification for your career switch - thatâs OK. Taking a few courses could be enough to give you the jump start you need and catch you up to people whoâve been in the field for years. 9. Find a Mentor While youâre making this transition, youâre going to be stressed and uncertain at times. A mentor can help keep you on track and remind you of the bigger picture. They donât have to be an incredibly successful, rich or powerful person to be an adequate guide for you during this time. However, it certainly wouldnât hurt if theyâre experienced in your new industry. 10. Begin the Job Hunt Recall all those skills you learned about job hunting during your senior year of college. Dig out your cover letter templates, interviewing tips and negotiation strategies. Remember the importance of researching companies thoroughly before applying, interviewing and especially before accepting a position. Itâs also important to remember that the job hunt is truly a hunt - itâs not going to happen overnight. Try not to think about it too much and trust that the right position for you will come along. 11. Continue Learning About Your New Field To keep yourself distracted while you wait to hear back from the seemingly endless amount of applications youâve filled out, keep learning about your new career. As we mentioned earlier, knowledge is power when it comes to breaking into a new industry. The more you know going into your new job, the less youâll have to adjust to on that first day. 12. Lose the Ego - Youâre Back at Square One Back to the bottom of the totem pole you go! Donât be above taking entry-level positions just because youâve been a working professional for 10 years - or more. Youâre just starting out in this industry, so youâre most likely going to have to start at the bottom, especially if itâs a big switch from your previous position. Be flexible, eager and willing to begin again. Your New Career Awaits Making a career change is not an easy feat. It takes a lot of strength, courage, willpower and determination to pull off. Use this guide to help you along the way, no matter how big of an industry change youâre making. When the stress creeps up on you, just take a breath and remind yourself that good things come to those who hustle. p.s. Resumonk helps you create a beautiful résumé cover letter in minutes. Stand out from the crowd and multiply your chances of landing your dream job.

Banish End-of-Year Stress at the Office - The Muse
Banish End-of-Year Stress at the Office - The Muse Banish End-of-Year Stress at the Office The holiday treats start flowing into the office (cookies=calories), decorations appear in the lunchroom (a dreidel hangs on a Christmas tree), and then the dreaded self-talk begins about what to buy for the secret office gift pool (a stress ball seems apropos). The festivities have begun, but the merrier trimmings wonât likely override the underlying state of the workforce. A Gallup poll this year found that 70% of the workforce was either disengaged or miserable. An uncertain labor market, work overload, and nudging thoughts about career advancement are enough to have you thinking about jumping on the next sleigh away from the office. Generally, we all get a bit sensitive with more work-life conflict during the holidays. But stress at the office, like year-end deadlines, office politics, and expectations from the corner office, can burn you out and make your eggnog go sour. Here are six tools to bring you comfort and joy this time of year, making your workplace holiday experience a little more manageable. 1. Donât Take Anything Personally For many people, the holidays can be tough. Old memories or wounds tend to surface, some miss loved ones, and December acts as a reminder of yet another year gone by. Unless youâre a mind reader, you wonât know whatâs going on with your colleagues in any given moment, and itâs unrealistic to try to figure it out. Instead, itâs extra important to give people the benefit of the doubt this time of year- accepting that they may be more stressed or pained than usual, and trying your best not to jump into defensive mode if someone lashes out at you. Thatâs not to say you should be a doormat. But consider the source before taking things to heart. Related: What to Do After You Snap at a Teammate (if You Want Everything to Go Back to Normal) 2. Determine What Can Wait With year-end reviews and deadlines on the horizon, we often spend the end of the year stressing over finishing last-minute reports, wrapping up back-burner projects, and squeezing in just one more meeting before the holidays- knowing full well in the back of our minds that itâs not all going to get done. This year, try this: With any item on your to-do list, ask yourself, âIs it a high-level priority that will impact my good standing at work- or can it wait?â For those second-tier projects, approach your manager with a few solutions, as well as more reasonable timelines in which you can get them done. 3. Practice a Growth Mindset Whether youâre dealing with a difficult colleague or wondering how to approach a problem at work, positive psychology research smiles upon working through the lens of a âgrowth mindset,â which opens your mind toward reframing thoughts that make you feel stuck. For example, think of a colleague youâve perceived as indifferent, difficult, or just set in his ways. Rather than concentrating on his faults or judging him, try focusing more on learning new ways to work with him. By using a more curious approach, youâll persist in the face of setbacks, learn from feedback, embrace challenges, and realize your effort can help you achieve more successful results- all of which creates positive emotions that can help reduce your stress at the office. Related: 3 Steps to Turn Any Setback Into a Success 4. Use Breath as a Daily Stress-Busting Ritual Incorporating regular deep breathing into your daily routine is the cheapest, easiest way possible to foster a sense of calm throughout your workday. Try setting your phone alarm twice a day for a breathing break (preferably, late morning and late afternoon). Take three deep breaths into the pit of your belly, evenly inhaling to a count of three, holding for a moment, and exhaling to a count of three. Do two rounds of that. Then on a third round, double the length of your exhalation, which triggers a physical relaxation response. Try it- and see how much better you feel about the task at hand afterward. 5. Find Moments of Solitude Itâs almost counterintuitive to imagine that the office can be a respite from the holiday bustle, but finding small ways to take a break throughout the day can really help your sanity this time of year. Take a walk, listen to some music for a few minutes- or if you can- just close your door for some quiet time. You could even try working in a conference room or telecommuting for a day or two. If itâs hard to take a break throughout the day, place a small trinket on your desk that reminds you to shift your mind to a calmer place, or display a family picture on your desk to help you remember the good people around you. Related: Take Five: 51 Things to Do When You Need a Break at Work 6. Savor Positive Experiences at Work The end of the year is always a good time to reflect, so take time to look back on the better moments from the last year at work. Were there projects that you influenced in a profitable or creative way? Were there relationships that enhanced your working experience? Even if you donât particularly like your job, writing a list of the good points associated with your position can enhance your skills of gratitude and positive thinking. In fact, research shows such behavior helps to activate the feel-good neurotransmitters of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine in your brain. This then triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to reduce stress. Donât let stress at the office get in the way of enjoying the holiday season. By proactively managing your work stress, youâll finish the year- and start the new one- in an all-around happier place. DON'T LET WORK STRESS BE YOUR NORM If it isn't just a holiday thing, maybe it's time to move on. MEET OUR CAREER COACHES

What Its Like to Be the Only One at Work - The Muse
What Its Like to Be the Only One at Work - The Muse What Its Like to Be the Only One at Work It is 8:55 AM on a Monday morning. I walk by the office of a co-worker who always seems to âknowâ what is going on in the office. She steadily checks her clock before greeting me as I walk to my office. I put my bag down, throw my jacket around my chair, and turn on my computer. I then take a deep breath without feeling a sense of relief or calmness. This was my morning over and over again at my previous job as a director of legal education. Was I stressed because of the nature of the work? Yes. Did I feel like I had a great support system at this place? Maybe. Was I the only person in my director position who was black in the office? Yes. This was not comforting at all. According to Fortune, âAfrican American women made up just 1.5% of senior-level executives in the private sector in 2014,â while Catalyst reports that African American women represent 6.1% of the workforce. Did you know there have only been 14 black male CEOs in the entire history of the Fortune 500? As an African American woman whoâs a lawyer, entrepreneur, and educator I wanted to pose the question: What do African American men and women need to do to thrive, not just survive in corporate America? What do African American men and women need to do to thrive, not just survive in corporate America? I donât have all the answers, but from my experience I do have four strategies thatâll make it easier: 1. Create Your Own Support System Itâs easy to feel like youâre the âonlyâ one dealing with a situation. The fact is, if youâre the only African American leader in your office, you must make an effort to connect with other similarly situated African Americans to build a community for yourself outside your company walls. Organizations like the National Black Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Black Journalists, National Black MBA Association, Inc., National Society of Black Engineers, 100 Black Men of America, Inc., National Coalition of Black Women, and The Executive Leadership Council can provide that sense of community and support you need to get ahead. 2. Find a Workplace That Wants You Believe it or not, diversity and inclusion are more than clever HR recruiting buzzwords at some organizations. There are definitely companies that have a genuine interest in not only recruiting candidates of color, but also creating work environments where people of different backgrounds actually feel wanted and included at their place of work. Do you know these employers in your industry? If not, then itâs important to communicate with current and former employees you may have connections with, review potential employerâs websites, gather as much information from recruiting and search firms, ask critical questions when youâre interviewing, and utilize employee review sites before you sign an offer letter. 3. Embrace the Similarities Not the Difference Being the âonlyâ one means you stand out all the time. When I was the only African American director in my region at my former employer, I remember feeling alone. Instead of focusing on being the âonlyâ one, find the similarities that exist with your colleagues. Do you need to be BFFs with your co-workers? No, but you should enjoy where you work. 4. Speak Up Have you ever felt like you were passed over for an opportunity? Or felt that your accomplishments were not valued as much as your those of your co-workers? If so, did you speak up? Too many times, Iâve heard friends and co-workers complain about this exact issue and not take it up with the right people. Why not? When dealing with work issues, you have to be your own advocate. You canât look to others to make your situation better. Will speaking up always get you what you want? Sadly, no, not likely. However, suffering in silence gets you nowhere. Once you voice your thoughts you can make that personal decision to remain where you are or take steps to go elsewhere if that is what you need to be happy. Itâs so easy to get caught up with what is happening around us that we forget about who comes after us. How are we making strides to ensure other African Americans can have an easier time joining the ranks? What are we doing to make sure they donât feel so alone? These are the questions I often find myself asking as I break down various barriers in my career. Personally, Iâve always believed that people are stronger together. African Americans who are breaking down doors in corporate America not only need to stick together (regardless of their industry), but they also need to share their experiences on a public platform to inform and inspire others. Write a blog post (or LinkedIn post) about your personal experience. Or if youâre into videos, share your story that way. Or welcome the opportunity to be a guest speaker or panelist at a school event or conference. Do what feels most comfortable to you. Just know that you canât imagine the impact your story can have on others.

The 5 essential components of an effective apology
The 5 essential components of an effective apology The 5 essential components of an effective apology Women apologize way too much; hey, weâre all socialized with that expectation. Because of this, one might think that when the times comes for us to say âIâm sorryâ to someone who actually deserves it, weâd be rockstars at it. But unfortunately, this isnât always the case. Saying these two little words can be quite a trying task, even when we really think we mean them and despite knowing that theyâre imperative to mending and maintaining all of our relationships.Nick Hobson, director of science for PsychologyCompass and a behavioral scientist who researches emotional functioning, makes it simple with his step-by-step instructions.1. Do it face-to-faceAs it does most things, technology can convolute apologies too. For this reason, Hobson recommends you apologize to someone in person rather than via email, text, or even a phone call. âThe sincerity in social cues will come through much more in person,â he says. âThereâs far too much ambiguity in word use and tone that gets lost. It will only make things worse.â An in-person apology might be intimidating, but in the end, you owe it to them.2. Actually mean itAnd, of course, for any apology to prove effective, the apologizer must be genuinely sorry for their words or actions. Fake apologies are fairly transparent, Hobson says, especially thanks to body language, tone, etc., if youâre following instruction #1. As much as not apologizing for your words and actions will weaken a relationship, a feigned apology can tank things even faster.3. Take responsibilityMost people love talking about themselves, so why not keep it up when saying youâre sorry? Cue the âIâ statements! âThe apology should include an acknowledgment of personal responsibility,â explains Hobson. âWhat a lot of people tend to do is offer an apology saying where they went wrong.â This will mean a lot more to a person than blaming their hurt feelings on an outside factor - or worse, on them.4. Provide cont extThis is the one part of an apology when youâre able to explain your understanding of where things went wrong and why. But this step leaves room for some big mistakes, such as, say, sounding like youâre trying to justify or excuse your behavior. Ensure the context is about reassuring the person you hurt that you understand where you went wrong and how to prevent it from recurring - not about making yourself look better. âAfter explaining what happened, the person apologizing should add the important caveat that, despite the rationale, they still recognize what they did was wrong, selfish, mean, etc.,â Hobson says.5. Make up for itAnyone whoâs received an empty apology has been able to identify it after the fact because the person kept up their problematic behavior. âA person feeling wronged by another will be looking for some honest signal that says theyâre not going to do it again,â asserts Hobson. âA key tactic, then, is to build in the apology, at the moment or shortly after, an act of generosity or kindness.â Taking the time to ensure they feel appreciated and cared for by you after breaking their trust is paramount to rebuilding your relationship.Whatâs your âIâm sorryâ strategy?
