Either way, a complaint like this quickly breeds negativity for all who have to hear it.3.These managers dont know what theyre doing.What you mean I think things could be managed better around here. What they hear when you say it I dont approve of the way management handles the work load/policies/meetings and will not produce my best work as long as they continue working this way.Why its a problem Youre pretty much begging to get fired, which might not be a problem if thats exactly what you want to happen4.Its stupid that they dont let us use social networks.What you mean Its stupid that they dont let us use social networks. (No misinterpreting this one)What they hear when you say it Facebooking, tweeting, or instant messaging is more important to me than working.Why its a problem Youre not getting paid to be a social butterfly. If your company doesnt allow access to social networking sites, its probably be cause employees have abused the privilege. Its not unreasonable to expect you to focus on company goals and not on your constant updates of followers.5.How come s/he has an office and the rest of us are stuck in a cube farm?What you mean That person doesnt seem qualified or important enough to deserve an office.What they hear when you say it I think Im more important than that person and I hate being mixed in with the rest of these bottom feeders.Why its a problem Whine whine whine, complain complain complain. Youre where you are because they think you should be there. If they thought you needed an office, you would have one. If you want an office, ask what you can do to earn a aufsteigen to a position that comes with one.6.I better take it easyI dont want them to expect this level of productivity from meallthetime.What you mean Hahaha Its a joke Seriously, I had a productive week and Im proud of what I accomplished.What they hear when you say it Im not putting in the effort I shoul d be. You should only expect 100% productivity from me every once in a while.Why its a problem The fact that you made this statement, even if you were joking, makes your employer question their decision to hire you. Youre basically telling them youre not interested in working hard and they shouldnt expect much from you. Seriously bad message to sendWe may all have these thoughts at times, but some things are better left in your head and out of the lines of conversation. If you still insist on complaining to your coworkers or manager in this fashion, I guarantee 1) Youll be labeled the bro Whiner, and 2) your coworkers will begin to resent you and avoid working with you whenever possible. I cant count how many schlocky motivational posters Ive seen emblazoned on middle management walls (or fabric-covered cubicle dividers, as the case may be) over the years, all claiming that teamwork is pretty much the solution to everything.And sure, Im all about striving for the greater good of the group- but at the end of the day, team performance is rarely a factor during those year-end reviews with your boss. Which is exactly why we all work so hard to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the pack. Lets be honest- its those special projects, great presentations, well-written articles, and everything in between that make us valuable members of the team (elend to mention help us get to the next level).Of course, this assumes youre actually getting the credit for your efforts- which, sadly, you can never assume. Whet her intentional or an honest mistake, colleagues and bosses routinely take credit where it is most certainly not due, and your contributions can go unnoticed by those who matter.To really succeed at the office, you not only need to do the work, you need to make sure your name is included in the credits. Heres how.Go PublicIn my first role as a manager, I welches cautious about sharing my ideas with the group- not because I didnt have them, but because I wanted to make sure they were good before speaking up. So, naturally, I turned to mora senior members of my team or my boss and bounced ideas off of them, first.Soon after, unterstellung same mentors and bosses shared these ideas in team meetings. Initially, I was thrilled- my ideas must be solid But that elation lasted for only a few moments before I quickly realized that my proposal wasnt being shared- it was being hijacked. Whats mora, even if I had spoken up, no one would ever believe the idea was mine after a more senior member of the team had mentioned it first.Instead of being overcome with disappointment and frustration (although trust me, I was filled with both), I turned the experience into a hard-learned lesson. The next time I had a great idea brewing, I thought through it, planned it out as if I already had buy-in from the group, and piped up to present it at the next team meeting.Since I first shared it in a public forum, everyone was aware that the idea was mine. And, because I had put extra effort into plotting out how to implement it, my boss and colleagues were more than happy to give me credit when we eventually presented it to a larger group.Though it might be intimidating, announcing your plans to a wider audience naturally helps prevent others from being tempted to borrow or be inspired by your ideas.Keep a Few Tricks Up Your SleeveSometimes, sharing your genius plans in a public forum isnt always possible, so youll have to find other ways to brand your ideas as your own.For example, when I was working on a very small team that rarely had meetings, it was nearly impossible for me to get my ideas in front of decision-makers until well after I had worked through them with my boss. On more than a few occasions, after spending weeks managing a project myself and crafting a winning presentation, I was rewarded with the opportunity to watch my boss lead the meeting where it was presented, never once mentioning who had done all the work.Finally, I decided to change my game. For every project going forward, I proceeded just as I had before, but I also did a bit of extra research. When the presentation rolled around, I had anecdotes and additional data that wasnt included in my boss speech- and I offered them up during the meeting. By being over-prepared and anticipating additional questions, I came across as an expert on the topic, without making my boss look bad.Whats more- after I started doing this, we ended up presenting more as a team. Although it was never explicitly n oted that I was behind the ideas, more and more credit began to shared equally between us.Know When to Let it GoWhile there are certainly times when I felt justified in speaking up for myself, perhaps the hardest lesson I had to learn was knowing when to just let it go. Heres the thing about getting credit Youre not going to get it for everything you do. Thats just part of the job, and its part of being on a team.I was reminded of this when I became a manager, and I had a few staff members who expected to be given credit for every positive outcome even remotely related to work they had done. I tried my best to recognize my team whenever warranted, but I found these continual reminders frustrating, almost always taking the shine off any positive feedback I had for them already.While there are ways you can position yourself to help assure youll earn that recognition from others, if you expect credit for everything you do, youll no doubt find yourself disappointed. Save your credit-ear ning strength for important projects and youll help establish yourself as not only an outstanding individual contributor, but a strong team player as well.

These are all the ways you can be a terrible leader These are all the ways you can be a terrible leader Below is a note I recently received from an executive coaching client that, although makes me sad, carries great wisdom. This high performing executive leader was leaving an organization she loved and had relocated for with mixed feelings. As is often the case, she was leaving because of her boss. - - - Good morning  Mary  Lee, I have one more week reporting to this woman that has made the last 14 months of my life incredibly difficult. The exit process has been even more difficult. In 20 years in the workplace I have never experienced anything like this from someone at this woman’s level. Every leader has opportunity, but I do not believe there are many who behave as badly as what I have witnessed over the past year. I am also amazed how her leaders look away, an ostrich to this woman’s behavior. I am not personalizing this (thank you  Mary  Lee), I understand it is simply inconvenient to disrupt the status quo or face the difficult conversations or the admit that perhaps it was a mistake to promote her to her current role. Her leaders are not stupid or unaware, despite the harm to our organization. So, I am writing this to you, because I will not talk with my team, or my peers about this (that would make me a terrible leader). As catharsis, the things I wish I could say but will not. You are a terrible leader. Not when you “hold people accountable”. Not when you are a “tough critic”. Not when you have “high standards”.   Not when you want results.   Not when you want to control costs. And not when you want to make changes in organizational structure. You are a terrible leader when you don’t realize the impact of your behavior and your words. You are a terrible leader when you are primarily concerned with how you appear to your leaders. You are a terrible leader when you don’t listen. You are a terrible leader when you believe you have all the answers. You are a terrible leader when you favor your friends and those you perceive as loyal to you. You are a terrible leader when you formulate opinions about employees based upon gossip. You are a terrible leader when you search for situations to support your subjective opinions. You are a terrible leader when you do not seek feedback from your team. You are a terrible leader when you are dishonest. You are a terrible leader when you make snarky comments about those you dislike. You are a terrible leader when you don’t communicate clearly. You are a terrible leader when you cause entire teams to be fearful of making any mistake. You are a terrible leader when you lack the ability to trust. You are a terrible leader when you waste others’ time scrambling for meaningless last-minute requests. You are a terrible leader when you have no respect for your subordinates’ time, calendar, or other obligations when you need something. You are a terrible leader when you trivialize and dismiss employee engagement, “they are never happy”, “they just want to complain”. You are a terrible leader when you are inequitable with opportunity, resources and support. You are a terrible leader when you withhold opportunity, resources and support as consequences for displeasing you. You are a terrible leader when you make decisions about employees based upon what HR can “prove.” You are a terrible leader when you scramble to cover organizational mistakes, rather than accepting and correcting. You are a terrible leader.   But you already know that. - - - I’m happy she is going to a role she’s excited about. Her culture tolerated a bad leader. Her peers did not demand more from this leader. They all felt they could not be heard because they’d be perceived as bad leaders themselves. This is cultural dysfunction. It costs people fulfillment which they’ll only put up with for so long. And it costs organizations millions in recruitment and on-boarding. Do you run a ‘safe’ work environment void of blame and open to candor? Do you seek and act on 360 feedback? Or do you look the other way because a leader can ‘get it done’ at any cost. If it’s the latter you’re foolish. Think of what you’d gain in productivity if you had both a servant and results oriented leader. And if you think you can’t have both you’re choosing to make excuses that are apathetic and in denial. Don’t be a terrible leader who tolerates terrible leadership. Revisit the company values. Develop departmental values. And recruit for talent that includes the values. It’s time that will payoff far more than the time investment up front. Don’t lose top talent because you’re lazy or you fear confrontation. Your culture and company depend on it. Rowling on how to deal with failure in life and work In August 1994, Joanne Rowling filed a restraining order against her husband, divorced shortly afterwards, and fell into a deep depression.Her one-year-old marriage had failed, and she suddenly found herself jobless, “as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless” and living off welfare benefits to take care of her five-month-old daughter.A few years prior, Rowling was dealt another series of blows when her mother died from multiple sclerosis, her relationship with her father broke down and she suffered a miscarriage.This was a far cry from the life that Rowling had hoped for, as she later noted, “I think it is fair to say that by any conventional measure…I had failed on an epic scale…The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.”  1These failures led Rowling to a state of clinical depression and the verge of suicide.  2But Rowling r efused to roll over and die.Shortly after leaving Portugal for the U.K., Rowling began writing her novel, whilst battling depression, fear and poverty. And in 1995, she finished her manuscript for the book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and submitted it to book agents.Little did she know at the time, how much her life would change afterwards.Within a five-year period, Rowling’s novel broke book sales records in the U.S. and U.K., won the British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year and sold seven-figure sum film rights to Warner Bros.And over a decade later, the Harry Potter book series became the best-selling book series of all-time- over 500 million copies sold worldwide- and Rowling became the world’s first billionaire author.How did this single mother climb out of poverty and failure to become world’s richest author? And what can we learn from this to effectively deal with failure in life and work?Rock Bottom As the Solid Foundation For Success“It†™s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.” - Tyler Durden, Fight Club.Right from childhood, our culture and society has told us how we should think about success and failure.As students in high school and college, we’re taught that anything less than the best grades, admission into the best colleges and recruitment by the best companies, is failure.As employees and entrepreneurs, we’re taught that anything less than a certain high income level, promotions, top performance reviews, a boatload of money for retirement and a profitable business, is failure.As parents and spouses, we’re taught that anything less than a happy marriage, well-brought-up children, and a large, spacious, beautiful house in the suburbs, is failure.As a result of these beliefs, we spend the majority of our lives trying to avoid failure at all costs.But what if failure is the very foundation for the success we strive for?After J.K. Rowling had “failed on an epic scale” and hit rock bottom, she was left with only two choices to make: either continue to hold unto societies negative beliefs about failure or use failure as a foundation for success.Rowling chose the latter and later explained that, “rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”In her 2008 Harvard Commencement Address on the ‘Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,’ Rowling further explains that:“Failure was a stripping away of the inessential. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea.”Re-framing failure as a fou ndation for success, gave Rowling the  confidence to bounce back  and pursue her dreams again, and the freedom to do so without the worry of what other people would think.Avoid the Pity Party Trap and Take Full Responsibility“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.” - Sigmund FreudIt’s easy to wallow in self-pity, point the finger at other people and avoid taking full responsibility for a failure.But avoidance of responsibility does not liberate, it enslaves.True freedom requires taking full responsibility for past, current and future actions. And it is only after doing so, that we are free to change the destiny of our lives and  bounce back from failure.At her lowest point, Rowling woke up every morning with severe depression, and a crippling fear that her two-year-old daughter, whom she loved dearly, would be dead: “It was almost a surprise to me every morning that she was still ali ve. I kept expecting her to die. It was a bad bad time.”  3Rowling- like most people in her unfortunate situation- could’ve thrown a pity party after her catastrophic failures, but instead, she chose to take full responsibility for her actions, and rebuild her life from scratch.Shortly afterwards, despite her poor living conditions, Rowling finished writing the manuscript for the Harry Potter novel, which turned her fortunes around.Imagine for a second what could’ve happened to Rowling and her two-year-old daughter, if Rowling refused to take full responsibility for her life.Today, Rowling would still be living off state benefits, still struggling to make ends meet, and an entire generation of children would never have heard of Harry Potter.Treat Failure Like A Scientist“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” ? Thomas A. EdisonIn 1995, after Rowling finished her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, she began to submit her novel to publishing houses.The book was submitted to twelve publishing houses. All twelve rejected the manuscript.  4But these failures didn’t stop Rowling from chasing her dreams. She got back on her feet and kept trying again.Rowling submitted her novel for the 13th time to Bloomsbury, a publishing house in London. This time however, her novel was accepted and published.When asked how she stayed motivated to push through the book rejections, Rowling said, “I had nothing to lose and sometimes that makes you brave enough to try.”  5Just like a scientist, Rowling saw failure as a data point to help guide the next experiment, rather than an indication of her self-worth.She saw failure as a cost to pay on the path to finding the right answers.Rowling treated failure like a scientist, and that’s why she kept trying, again and again, until she su cceeded.Let Failure Fuel Your FireBut it ain’t about how hard ya hit. We’re here to remind you that you aren’t stuck, and it’s totally possible to switch into a different industry, field or position. Maybe you’ve lost interest in your current profession, or maybe you’ve discovered a new interest in another field. No matter the reason, deciding to switch careers is life-changing. To be successful at whatever it is you choose to do, you need to make the change the right way. If you’re considering a career change  but don’t know where to start, follow these 12 steps: 1. Discover What You Truly Enjoy The last thing you want is to go through the process of switching careers just to get into an industry you don’t like. List your likes, dislikes, values and interests. Identify exactly what it is about your current job that’s making you want to leave - and make sure to avoid career paths that could have the same obstacles. For some people, this could be the toughest step. Figuring out what you truly enjoy and are passionate about after ignoring it for years isn’t a simple task. Ask yourself, “What do I get excited about doing?” or “What’s something I spend my free time thinking about or doing?” Choose a career related to your answers to those questions.   2. List Careers That Satisfy Your Passions Once you’ve keyed in on some of your passions and interests, search for careers that would encompass those things. For example, if you spend a lot of your time thinking about or hanging out with your dog, consider a career that has to do with animals. The important part about this step is keeping your skills in mind, as well. Just because you like dogs doesn’t mean you have the expertise or skills required to be a veterinarian. However, if your skills include marketing, writing and designing, you could consider working as a marketing specialist for an animal protection agency or dog kennel. The trick is to combine your skills with your passion to create your ideal position, and go from there.   3. Research the Careers That Made Your List Once you’ve come up with your list of dream careers, start researching. The bigger the industry change you’re making, the more research you should do. If you want to make a worthwhile, informed decision, this might be the most important step. Think about the years of research and education you had before going into your current position - can you imagine how difficult it would’ve been to adjust without all that information? Set yourself up for success by learning as much as you can before you start applying to jobs. 4. Make the Decision   You’ve brainstormed your interests, listed careers that relate to them and researched them all - now it’s time to decide. Making a decision is important because it will frame the way the rest of your career change process goes. You need to pinpoint a specific industry or career you’re trying to break into in order to achieve that goal. 5. Develop an Action Plan Once you’ve decided on the path you’re going to take next, develop a specific plan with measurable goals, action items and a timeline. There are probably new skills you need to learn, professionals you should meet and work to wrap up at your current job. You might even have a few personal goals you’d like to work on while making this shift. Leaping from career to career isn’t a casual move - you don’t want to take it lightly. The more detailed your plan is, the better chance you’ll have at finding your dream job quickly. 6. Adjust Your Personal Brand When you hand someone your business card or invite them to check out your online portfolio, they should be able to tell which industry you belong to now - not your past field. This step includes adjusting your resume, cover letter and portfolio as much as possible so potential employers know you’re all in. When you edit your own professional brand to be more related to the new industry, they’ll see your dedication in that aspect. Not only will this be difficult to juggle with your current position, but it’ll also help you confirm you’re truly interested in the field. If it’s not required to get a job in the field, you might not feel the need to get a new degree or certification for your career switch - that’s OK. Taking a few courses could be enough to give you the jump start you need and catch you up to people who’ve been in the field for years. 9. Find a Mentor While you’re making this transition, you’re going to be stressed and uncertain at times. A mentor can help keep you on track and remind you of the bigger picture. They don’t have to be an incredibly successful, rich or powerful person to be an adequate guide for you during this time. However, it certainly wouldn’t hurt if they’re experienced in your new industry. 10. Begin the Job Hunt Recall all those skills you learned about job hunting during your senior year of college. Dig out your cover letter templates, interviewing tips and negotiation strategies. I walk by the office of a co-worker who always seems to “know” what is going on in the office. She steadily checks her clock before greeting me as I walk to my office. I put my bag down, throw my jacket around my chair, and turn on my computer. I then take a deep breath without feeling a sense of relief or calmness. This was my morning over and over again at my previous job as a director of legal education. Was I stressed because of the nature of the work? Yes. Did I feel like I had a great support system at this place? Maybe. Was I the only person in my director position who was black in the office? Yes. This was not comforting at all. According to Fortune, “African American women made up just 1.5% of senior-level executives in the private sector in 2014,” while Catalyst reports that African American women represent 6.1% of the workforce. Did you know there have only been 14 black male CEOs in the entire history of the Fortune 500? As an African American woman who’s a lawyer, entrepreneur, and educator I wanted to pose the question: What do African American men and women need to do to thrive, not just survive in corporate America? What do African American men and women need to do to thrive, not just survive in corporate America? I don’t have all the answers, but from my experience I do have four strategies that’ll make it easier: 1. Create Your Own Support System It’s easy to feel like you’re the “only” one dealing with a situation. The fact is, if you’re the only African American leader in your office, you must make an effort to connect with other similarly situated African Americans to build a community for yourself outside your company walls. Organizations like the National Black Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Black Journalists, National Black MBA Association, Inc., National Society of Black Engineers, 100 Black Men of America, Inc., National Coalition of Black Women, and The Executive Leadership Council can provide that sense of community and support you need to get ahead. 2. Find a Workplace That Wants You Believe it or not, diversity and inclusion are more than clever HR recruiting buzzwords at some organizations. There are definitely companies that have a genuine interest in not only recruiting candidates of color, but also creating work environments where people of different backgrounds actually feel wanted and included at their place of work. Do you know these employers in your industry? If not, then it’s important to communicate with current and former employees you may have connections with, review potential employer’s websites, gather as much information from recruiting and search firms, ask critical questions when you’re interviewing, and utilize employee review sites before you sign an offer letter. 3. Embrace the Similarities Not the Difference Being the “only” one means you stand out all the time. When I was the only African American director in my region at my former employer, I remember feeling alone. Instead of focusing on being the “only” one, find the similarities that exist with your colleagues. Do you need to be BFFs with your co-workers? No, but you should enjoy where you work. 4. Speak Up Have you ever felt like you were passed over for an opportunity? Or felt that your accomplishments were not valued as much as your those of your co-workers? If so, did you speak up? Too many times, I’ve heard friends and co-workers complain about this exact issue and not take it up with the right people. Why not? When dealing with work issues, you have to be your own advocate. You can’t look to others to make your situation better. Will speaking up always get you what you want? Sadly, no, not likely. However, suffering in silence gets you nowhere. Once you voice your thoughts you can make that personal decision to remain where you are or take steps to go elsewhere if that is what you need to be happy. It’s so easy to get caught up with what is happening around us that we forget about who comes after us. How are we making strides to ensure other African Americans can have an easier time joining the ranks? What are we doing to make sure they don’t feel so alone? These are the questions I often find myself asking as I break down various barriers in my career. Personally, I’ve always believed that people are stronger together. African Americans who are breaking down doors in corporate America not only need to stick together (regardless of their industry), but they also need to share their experiences on a public platform to inform and inspire others. Write a blog post (or LinkedIn post) about your personal experience. Or if you’re into videos, share your story that way. Or welcome the opportunity to be a guest speaker or panelist at a school event or conference. Do what feels most comfortable to you. Just know that you can’t imagine the impact your story can have on others.
